![]() ![]() Even after they were completed, I needed to go back quite a number of times to really embed the learning. I would regularly do the circle for the current day, but then go back and do the ones above it. My understanding went up leaps and bounds after I learned to use keyboard input. It's amazing how much better you remember stuff after a night's sleep.Ĭlicking on the tiles didn't teach me very much. The best way to embed vocab was always the same: lots of repetition, but then sleep on it. Simple things like "do you want a cup of tea?" Many times these messages had bad grammar. My wife is also learning Chinese on Duolingo, so I began sending her text messages in Chinese through the day. So you can watch Chinese TV, hear the language spoken, and at the same time see both the Chinese text and an English text below it. You can then add English subtitles as well. The best thing about watching Chinese dramas is that the Chinese subtitle their dramas in Chinese and burn that into the videos. My favourites were Reset, The Long Ballad, Go Ahead, Ashes of Love and The Story of MingLan. There are some amazing dramas free on Youtube. I also supplemented both of those with Chinese TV. I also supplemented Duolingo and Memrise with Duchinese, which is a set of graded readers with translations. ![]() Duolingo felt much more fun when I separated out the learning part from the using part like this. By the third time I knew enough of the vocab to do that lesson on Memrise. Then I'd take a gap of an hour and do it again. I'd click "I didn't know that" to every word, and have it loop round till I said I knew each of them. Then go through them as self-assessed flashcards. The best way I found to learn each circle was to first make a folder of vocabulary in Pleco. It took me 278 days at (roughly) 2 hours a day to finish the course. In case it's useful for other people, here's what I learned: I've just completed the Duolingo Chinese course to legendary in every circle. ![]()
